This is an unbalanced poppet logic element valve, spring-biased to closed. Port 2 serves as the pilot source. The opening and closing of the poppet are dependent on the force balances on the areas of the poppet at port 1, port 2 and port 3. If port 3 is blocked, the valve remains closed (port 1 to port 2 closed), acting as a check valve from port 2 to port 1. When port 3 is vented, the valve will open if sufficient pressure is applied to overcome the spring force. To keep the valve closed, the combined force (force generated at port 3 plus spring force) must exceed the forces at port 1 and port 2.
